Our central station is not only UL approved but FM certified as well.   FM certification require central stations to do these types of things as well, but is more industrial than UL.

We have 28 dispatchers on the day shift (the most busiest time of the day), 18 on the afternoon shift, and 8 on the midnight shift  24/7 365 days a year.   We also have on every shift, a manager and floor supervisor that walks the floor to make sure every call is being handled correctly.

Mom & Pop

bullet 80% are located in their homes (a local area alarm company who boasts they have the only in house central station in the tri-county area is located above a small general store.
bullet One person on duty to handle all receptionist duties, service calls, and alarm dispatching (at some time they have to use the restroom).
bullet Normally no back up generator in place or it's not normally tested.
bullet Alarm signals are called from your home or business on local lines (have you checked your phone bills lately?)
bullet No redundancy for phone lines, computers, or central station if something should happen to it.
bullet No radio or cellular back up systems.
bullet Anyone in the company has access to all customer vital records, even helpers, cleaning crews, or anyone else who comes in to visit.
bullet Normally staffed by friends or relatives and lucky if they have a background check or follow local licensing.  

 

In the State of Maryland anyone that has vital access to alarm information (including salespersons) must be licensed by the Maryland State Police.
